“We saved for 18 years and still had to take out student loans. Then the fund was gone.”

“The 529 earns about 4%-5% while the market does 11% and I’ll never get those years back.”

Here’s what paying for college looks like when the fund is built to last

Grow the fund at market rates, not savings-account rates

Most 529s keep pace with college costs, both creeping along at 4%-5% per year while the market runs closer to 11%*. Kiddos Capital takes the same dollars and invests in a direct index fund that earns equity returns and harvests tax losses. With most 529s you are treading water, while with Kiddos you are making progress.

Borrow against the fund, don't drain it

When tuition is due, most families drain their 529 and take loans for the rest. Kiddos Capital members borrow on advantageous terms so the fund keeps growing through all four years and beyond. The fund stays invested through college and continues paying down the loan after graduation.

Come out of college with money left over, not a bill

Your plan is designed so that after graduation, the fund pays off the loan and keeps growing, leaving something left over for you. The money you spent 18 years building doesn’t disappear into college – it continues growing for your family to use on a house, a wedding, a new business, or your own retirement. Pay for college, keep the fund.

How it plays out

Every family’s path looks a little different, here’s one way it could go.

FAQs

Every family makes their own personalized monthly contribution based on their kid’s age(s) and the type of school(s) they’re interested in. On average, a member with one child contribute $125-$400/mo. That contribution goes into your Kiddos Fund, held at Altruist, where it grows through market returns and any gifts from family and friends. From there, it covers your insurance premium, your Kiddos Capital service fee ($60/mo flat, plus 0.75%/year of your fund balance), and — once your child graduates — the payments on your member-negotiated loan.

Kiddos Capital is built for parents of young kids — especially ages 0 to 6 — who want to pay for college without draining their savings and finish with money left over. It’s also for grandparents and family who want to help: through the Kiddos Capital gifting program, they can contribute straight into the fund, where their gift earns equity returns alongside the family’s investment.

A 529 is a savings account designed to be emptied. Most 529s earn 4.7 – 5.3% on average for 18 years, then you drain it to pay for college. Kiddos Capital is a college funding membership built to last: you invest in a direct index fund, borrow at member negotiated rates when tuition is due, and after graduation the fund pays off the loan and you keep whatever’s left. The average 529 holds about $28k against a $150k cost of college. Kiddos Capital is designed so your fund can pay for college and build wealth over the long run instead of running dry.

With Kiddos Capital the money isn’t locked to college tuition. Your fund lives in an unrestricted brokerage account, so if your child skips college, takes a different path, or earns a scholarship, the money stays with your family to use on anything — a first home, a business, or your own retirement. That’s different from a 529 where using the money outside of education can trigger taxes and penalties.

Kiddos Capital membership includes term life insurance, to ensure child’s college plan keeps going even if you’re not there to fund it. In the event of a death of a parent, the insurance payout is added to your Kiddos fund, Kiddos waive the $60/month fee, and we work with you to reduce, possibly to $0, your monthly contributions. The plan is still designed to achieve your goals in 90% of market conditions. So if something happens to you, the coverage helps keep the plan on track, the fund your family started doesn’t stall, and college stays funded.

You will have the Kiddos loan with advantageous terms as part of your Kiddos Capital membership. Kiddos is designed so that your child will not have to take out their own loan that they have to pay out of their paycheck.

Typically, to keep the monthly contribution as low as possible, families continue to make their monthly contributions until the loan is repaid. You can plan to stop at any time – college graduation, your retirement – but that may change the amount of the monthly contribution. Your Kiddos Capital advisor will walk you through the options.

It’s totally up to you. Your child could take on 100% of the monthly contribution immediately after graduation, or take on an increasing proportion each year as they get settled into their career. It’s your decision as a family and your Kiddos Capital advisor can walk you through your options.

No. Most families drain their 529 the moment tuition hits. Kiddos Capital members borrow at member-negotiated terms, so your Kiddos fund stays invested and keeps growing while college gets paid. The fund pays the loan back after graduation which is how it survives college and still has money left over for your family.

Kiddos Capital makes money through a flat monthly membership fee ($60/mo.) plus 0.75% of the fund. This amount is paid out of the fund, Kiddos fees are NOT in addition to the monthly contribution. Every member gets paired with a fiduciary Investment Advisor Representative (IAR) who earns zero commissions on loans, investments, gifts, or insurance, and isn’t paid to sell you products. Their only job is your college and financial plan, so the guidance you get on investing, gifting, and lending is built around your family’s goals, not a sales quota.

Pay for college without sacrificing your future
